College Prep & Leadership Academy hasn't had much luck against Bishop McGuinness recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The College Prep & Leadership Academy Royals will square off against the Bishop McGuinness Villains at 6:30 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, College Prep & Leadership Academy didn't have too much trouble with Cornerstone Charter as they won 45-31. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Royals.
College Prep & Leadership Academy relied on the efforts of MacKenzie Dumbuya, who went 6 of 10 to rack up 21 points, and Melody Johnson, who went 5 for 9 en route to 14 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Blessing Williams, who posted six points and eight rebounds.
Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led Bishop McGuinness over West Forsyth in every quarter on their way to victory on Saturday. Bishop McGuinness enjoyed a cozy 64-46 victory over West Forsyth. Given the Villains' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 18th, while the Titans are ranked 213th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
College Prep & Leadership Academy better focus on containing Adelaide Jernigan and Claire Sullivan as the pair were huge in Bishop McGuinness' win. Jernigan went 15 of 27 on her way to 36 points and seven boards, while Sullivan went 7 for 15 to rack up 18 points in addition to eight steals and seven rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Jernigan has scored at least a third of Bishop McGuinness' points. Another player making a difference was Olivia Stone, who scored six points.
Bishop McGuinness smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in six consecutive contests.
College Prep & Leadership Academy pushed their record up to 9-6 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 21.0 points over those games. As for Bishop McGuinness, their record is now 19-1.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: College Prep & Leadership Academy has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 22.7 boards per game. However, it's not like Bishop McGuinness struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31.3 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
