Basketball Recap: Ponce De Leon Makes It Six in a Row at Home

Ponce De Leon proved they can win big last Monday (they won by 28) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Marianna Bulldogs, sneaking past 39-37. The 39-point effort marked the Pirates' lowest-scoring matchup of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Despite the loss, Marianna had strong showings from Ja'Shonna Mathis, who posted 16 points, and Dessiah Gee, who scored 12 points. The dominant performance gave Mathis a new career-high in points. Ja'Shonda Mathis was another key player, putting up four points and five boards.

Ponce De Leon pushed their record up to 10-4 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.5 points per game. As for Marianna, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last seven games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-10 record this season.

Ponce De Leon will take on Jay at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Marianna, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 43-39 victory against Malone on the 16th.
