Flag Football Recap: Ana Matuz and Evie Maas Secure Win for Xavier College Prep

There's no place like home for Xavier College Prep, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They took down the Sunnyside Blue Devils 14-0 on Thursday. For the Gators, this counts as revenge for the 6-3 victory the Blue Devils walked away with the last time they faced one another back in November of 2024.

A big part of Xavier College Prep's win came down to the chemistry between Ana Matuz and her top target Evie Maas. Matuz threw for 256 yards and a pair of TDs while Maas picked up 96 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The dominant performance also gave Matuz a new career-high in rushing yards (44).

Xavier College Prep didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Ava Portillo and Cooper Hidalgo. Portillo has been hot recently, having also posted two or more defended passes the last four times she's played.

Xavier College Prep pushed their record up to 9-5 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 0.6 points on average over those games. As for Sunnyside, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-3 record this season.

Xavier College Prep has already played their next matchup, a 41-25 loss against Desert Vista on the 4th. As for Sunnyside, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 17-15 victory against Tucson High Magnet School on the 4th.
