Softball Preview: Zuni Thunderbirds vs. Tohatchi Cougars
Zuni and Tohatchi are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2018, but likely not for long. The Zuni Thunderbirds will head out on the road to challenge the Tohatchi Cougars at 3:00 p.m. in Tuesday's first game. Zuni has now lost eight straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since March 28.
Last Friday, Zuni suffered a rough 20-7 loss at the hands of Sandia Prep.
Zuni saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Reina Chimoni-Zunie, who scored a run while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances. Aubrey Awelagte was another key contributor, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Tohatchi pushed their score all the way to 15 in Tuesday's second game, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell just short of Thoreau by a score of 16-15. Tohatchi has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Zuni's defeat dropped their record down to 2-12. As for Tohatchi, their loss dropped their record down to 5-7.
Zuni took their win against Tohatchi when the teams last played back in April of 2023 by a conclusive 17-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for Zuni since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
