Basehor-Linwood’s boys basketball team had a tough act to follow in the championship game of the Basehor-Linwood Basketball Tournament last weekend. Shortly after watching the Bobcat girls win their first title in their own tournament, the boys took the court.

While the girls pulled away from previously undefeated Platte County (Mo.) with a strong second half performance to win, 65-51, the boys waited until the final seconds to secure their win.

It wasn’t until Holton’s David Martin clanked a 3-point shot off the rim, late in the game, that the Bobcats secured the triumph and moved their record to 9-4 following a 1-3 start to the season. Basehor-Linwood vaults into the 4A lineup, at No. 4, with the 55-54 squeaker over the Wildcats.

The Bobcats opened the tournament with a 57-54 win over Platte County. Basehor-Linwood then pulled away from third-ranked Ottawa to advance to the championship match with a 54-44 win.

Cassie Lombardino led the way for the girls as the Bobcats advance one spot to third in the latest MaxPreps rankings. The 6-foot-3 post player scored 12 points in the first 10 minutes, of the second half, on her way to a team-high 21 points for the Bobcats. Platte County’s Morgan Johnson scored 25 points in the contest despite sitting on the bench much of the second half in foul trouble.

Johnson looked unstoppable in the first period by scoring eight points and grabbing four rebounds, in the first eight minutes. The Pirates bolted to a 13-5 first quarter lead. With Johnson on the bench, Lombardino scored on four straight possessions in the third period as Basehor-Linwood started to make their move.
