Trevor May spent the spring pitching in front of Major League Baseball scouts who came to games armed with a radar guns.

Thursday, one of those scouts talked his boss – the Philadelphia Phillies – into picking May with the last pick of the fourth round.

The Kelso ace was the only Washington high school player taken in the first day of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft.

May, who had signed a letter of intent to pitch at Washington, has until Aug. 15 to sign with the Phillies. Negotiations will begin after May graduates. It’s likely he’ll head to rookie ball in Clearwater, Fla., if he signs.

May, who has a 4.0 grade-point average, went 11-1 and guided the Hilanders to the Class 3A state title game.

“I feel fantastic. Elated. Relieved,” May told the Longview Daily News. “I can’t even really explain it.”

May is the fourth right-hander and fifth pitcher drafted from Kelso since the Atlanta Braves took Jason Schmidt in the eighth round in1991.

Baseball: Dodgers Outslug Braves in All-State Series

David Olson hit a three-run homer as the Dodgers beat the Braves 18-11 in the championship of the All-State Baseball Series in Yakima.

Olson’s homer and Jeremey Gendlek’s two-run double helped produce a nine-run fifth inning, which saw eight hits and 12 batters.

The four-team series is comprised of players culled from regional all-star games.

Snohomish’s Ethan Hargrave hit a two-run homer as the Athletics won the consolation game 10-4 over the Braves.
