Two dominant guards in Phillayjah Carroll and Janae Mcfall are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Space Coast Vipers will challenge the Edgewood Red Wolves at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Edgewood is hoping to do what Cocoa Beach couldn't on Thursday: put an end to Space Coast's winning streak, which now stands at eight games. Space Coast breezed by Cocoa Beach to the tune of 50-22. Given the Vipers' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 180th, while the Minutemen are ranked 468th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Space Coast found their leader in freshman Zanya Smith, who went 5 of 7 on her way to 10 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Nakayla Smith, who posted six points and three steals.
Meanwhile, after only 25 points in their last match, Edgewood made sure to put some points up on the board against Merritt Island on Thursday. Edgewood took their contest with ease, bagging a 55-23 win over Merritt Island. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Red Wolves' offense, which had struggled in the games prior.
Edgewood's win came from a few key players Space Coast will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Da'Varriea Robertson, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Mcfall, who went 8 of 20 on her way to 19 points and five steals.
Edgewood was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in January of 2024.
Space Coast has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-5 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.5 points per game. As for Edgewood, their victory bumped their record up to 9-4.
Space Coast came up short against Edgewood when the teams last played back in January of 2024, falling 50-41. Can Space Coast avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
