League recap: Highland Tech wins, gets boost in standings

1A Conference 3 recap September 17, 2013

Highland Tech was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from fifth to second in 1A Conference 3. Earlier in the week, Highland Tech defeated Highland Tech 38-0.

Cherryville lost to North Gaston 62-13 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Cedric Mackey was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 113 yards on 19 carries as Bessemer City lost to North Lincoln. Teammate Tyler Bess added to the ground attack by rushing for 67 yards.

Mackey provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Yellowjackets lost to the Knights.

Thomas Jefferson Academy's Mason Martin and Efrim Borders have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-1 quarterback Martin has thrown for 372 yards this season, while Borders has 15 catches for 246 yards. Bessemer City's Mackey leads the league in rushing yards with 443.

A big matchup in 1A Conference 3 this week will be when Larry Boone's team takes on Highland Tech. As it stands, the Yellowjackets are in fourth, while Highland Tech is in second.

Highland Tech made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 13,986 from 14,245. The improvement came about via a 38-0 victory over Highland Tech last week.
