The Derry Trojans are packing up and heading out on the road for their first away game of the season: they will challenge the Mt. Pleasant Vikings at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The last three games Derry has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Derry is headed into the contest having just posted their closest win since April 25, 2024 on Monday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 victory over Ligonier Valley.
Jayden Struble looked comfortable as he pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Mason Fridley, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and one stolen base. Jon Wasnick was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Mt. Pleasant entered their tilt with Freeport on Tuesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by a 14-4 margin over the Yellowjackets. The matchup marked the Vikings' most dominant win of the season so far.
Dane Firmstone was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Cole Chatfield, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Mt. Pleasant always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .576. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.
Mt. Pleasant's victory was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 3-2-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Derry, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.
Everything went Derry's way against Mt. Pleasant in their previous matchup back in May of 2023, as Derry made off with a 16-5 win. Will Derry repeat their success, or does Mt. Pleasant has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
