The La Vernia Bears will square off against the Hidalgo Early College Pirates at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. La Vernia is coming into the contest hot, having won their last eight games.
On Friday, La Vernia didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against El Campo, but they still walked away with a 25-21 victory. Given the Bears' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 155th, while the Ricebirds are ranked 446th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

COOPER NULL had another great game (as he tends to do), rushing for 107 yards and three TDs. TY CARTER helped out on the ground, rushing for 88 yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: La Vernia was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 269 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 179 rushing yards in 18 consecutive games dating back to last season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Hidalgo Early College). They took down Valley View 31-14 on Friday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Pirates needed considering they were shut out in their previous contest.
La Vernia better keep an eye on Roberto Gallegos. He was instrumental in Hidalgo Early College's win, rushing for 101 yards and three scores, while also picking up 36 receiving yards. Those three rushing touchdowns gave Gallegos a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Javier Martinez, who picked up 171 receiving yards.
La Vernia's record is now 9-1. As for Hidalgo Early College, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-9.
Thursday's matchup might be decided on the ground. La Vernia has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 264 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Hidalgo Early College struggles in that department as they've been averaging 156.3 rushing yards. There's a good chance Thursday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
