Basketball Recap: Gulf Extends Winning Streak to Five

Gulf had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 35.3 points) and they went ahead and made it five on Monday. They walked away with a 75-65 win over the River Ridge Royal Knights. While the Buccaneers didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Gulf was led to victory by Mikha Brown and Jaydn Wood. Brown went 8 of 20 en route to 22 points and eight steals, while Wood dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 boards. With that strong performance, Wood is now averaging an impressive 2.1 steals per game. Another player making a difference was Josh Murphy, who posted eight points and seven assists.

River Ridge's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was John Golden, who went 5 of 12 on his way to 12 points in addition to eight boards and three blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Tommy DeLoreto, who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine boards.

Gulf's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-1. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.8 points per game. As for River Ridge, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-3.

Gulf wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 50-46 defeat against Land O' Lakes on the 10th. As for River Ridge, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 85-79 loss against Dunedin on the 11th.
