Softball Recap: Skyline Wins High-Profile Matchup Against Issaquah

Skyline faced Issaquah in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. The Spartans narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Eagles 7-5. This was a revenge game for the Spartans: when they faced off against the Eagles back in March, they had to take a 16-2 defeat.

Abby Haapala tossed a big game, striking out 12 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in March of 2024.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Shea Staley, who went 3-for-5 with one home run, two runs, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma Dahlgren, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Skyline has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.9 runs on average over those games. As for Issaquah, their loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-2.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Skyline will challenge rival Bothell at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Issaquah is set to face off against their familiar foe Redmond at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Eagles 3.8, the Mustangs 3.8) so any runs scored will be well earned.
