League recap: Velma-Alma wins, gets boost in standings

Velma-Alma was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in A District 4. Earlier in the week, the Comets defeated Wilson 46-14.

Ringling moved up to 98 from 131 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 49-7 win over Healdton helped the Blue Devils improve their standing.

Velma-Alma's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Ty Richardson threw for 60 and one touchdown and Austin Dennis had 59 yards receiving. On the ground Dallen Mercer chipped in 335 yards. Checotah Lynn helped Velma-Alma's passing attack out by catching one ball for six yards.

Velma-Alma's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Comets feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Richardson has thrown for 538 yards and seven touchdowns this season, while Lynn has 13 catches for 201 yards. Mercer leads the league in rushing with 672 yards.

A big matchup in A District 4 this week will be when the Bulldogs take on Empire. Healdton is currently in fifth, while the Bulldogs are in first.

Ringling made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 5,387 from 7,235. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 49-7 victory over Mark Barrett's team last week.
