Basketball Recap: Ryle Drops Highest Score of Season Against Newport Central Catholic

Ryle scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They took a 69-61 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds. The Raiders were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Thoroughbreds apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2022.

Ryle's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaelyn Jones, who posted 19 points in addition to six rebounds and five assists. The game was Jones' tenth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Piper Aschermann, who went 6 of 10 en route to 14 points.

Even though they lost, Ryle smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in December of 2023.

Ryle's loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 3-9. As for Newport Central Catholic, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-6.

Ryle will square off against Dixie Heights at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Dixie Heights' favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season. As for Newport Central Catholic, they will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Lloyd Memorial at 7:30 p.m. on January 14th.
