Baseball Recap: University Hawks vs. Lewis County Minutemen

University waltzed into their game on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Lewis County Minutemen and snuck past 6-5. That result was just more of the same for these two, as University also won the last time the pair played back in May of 2023.

Wenkai Campbell made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching an inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Campbell has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive pitching appearances. Campbell was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs, a triple, and a stolen base.

In other pitching news, James Bryner tossed a big game, striking out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive pitching appearances.

Campbell wasn't the only one making solid contact as seven players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Mason McDonald, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3. Another player making a difference was Brodee Latocha, who scored a run while going 1-for-4.

On Lewis County's side, Drew Cayton and Trenton Hunt stepped up to the plate in a big way. Cayton scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances, while Hunt scored a run while going 1-for-3.

University pushed their record up to 15-13 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home. As for Lewis County, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 15-6.

University has the luxury of staying home for another game and will welcome Buckhannon-Upshur at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Lewis County does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
