Recap: Memphis Cyclones vs. Wheeler Mustangs
This season hasn't been kind to The Memphis Cyclones, who are still winless after their eighth game. They had to suffer through a rough 31-0 loss at the hands of Wheeler. Memphis was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Wheeler apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in October of 2022.
Wheeler found their leader in underclassman Creed Newkirk, who rushed for 81 yards on only seven carries, and also threw for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Julius Atherton was another key contributor, rushing for 69 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries.
Memphis' loss was their sixth straight at home (dating back to last season), which dropped their overall record down to 0-8. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 7-2 Wellington and 7-2 Ralls (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 64.2% over those games). As for Wheeler, their win ended a eight-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-6.
Memphis will square off against Shamrock at 7:00 p.m. on November 3rd. Hopefully Shamrock focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up six on Friday. As for Wheeler, they will be playing at home against Quanah at 7:00 p.m. on November 3rd. Quanah comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 12 points in their last four games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
