Basketball Game Preview: Burke County Bears vs. Laney Wildcats

Burke County and Laney are an even 3-3 against one another since December of 2018, but not for long. The Burke County Bears will face off against the Laney Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Burke County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 14 games -- so hopefully Laney likes a good challenge.

Last Tuesday, Burke County took their matchup with ease, bagging a 76-26 win over Josey. The Bears have beaten the Eagles the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Eagles has come to flipping the script.

Omarion Cobb and La'Quinton Morgan were among the main playmakers for Burke County as the former posted 11 points in addition to five assists and five steals and the latter almost dropped a double-double with 13 points and nine assists. That's the most assists Cobb has posted since back in December of 2024. Kordell Williams was another key player, going 5-for-7 to rack up 12 points and six rebounds.

Burke County typically has all the answers at home, but on Friday Laney proved too difficult a challenge. They walked away with a 70-58 victory over the Bears. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Wildcats.

Laney pushed their record up to 18-6 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.5 points over those games. As for Burke County, their victory bumped their record up to 15-5.

Burke County came up short against Laney in their previous matchup on Friday, falling 70-58. Can Burke County avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
