Baseball Game Preview: Boylan Catholic Titans vs. Freeport Pretzels

Boylan Catholic has gone 9-1 against Freeport recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Titans are taking a road trip to challenge the Pretzels at 4:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Boylan Catholic didn't have quite enough to beat LaSalle-Peru and fell 4-3.

Boylan Catholic got a good showing from Aidan Baluch, who pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. The dominant performance also gave Baluch a new career-low in walks (zero).

On the hitting side, Noah McDermott made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Boylan Catholic's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 5-9-1 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Michael Davenport, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Meanwhile, Freeport came tearing into Saturday's match with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.8 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Hurricanes as they made off with an 11-1 victory. That's two games straight that the Pretzels have won by exactly ten runs.

Freeport's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-5. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.7 runs over those games. As for Boylan Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-10-1.

Boylan Catholic took their win against Freeport when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 14-6 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Titans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
