Basketball Recap: Washington County Tigers vs. Onaga Buffaloes

Washington County was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their ninth straight loss. They took a hard 68-52 fall against the Onaga Buffaloes. The Tigers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Buffaloes apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Despite the loss, Washington County saw an underclassman step up: freshman Chayse Gross dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 boards. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gross has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Michael Peterson, who went 6 for 9 on his way to 12 points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Washington County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Onaga only pulled down seven offensive boards.

Jackson Kolterman had a dynamite game for Onaga, going 7 of 15 en route to 26 points and four steals. Casen Hutfles was another key player, dropping a double-double on 11 points and 14 boards.

Washington County's defeat dropped their record down to 2-9. As for Onaga, they moved to 2-8 with that win, which also ended their seven-game losing streak.

A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Washington County Tigers challenge the Frankfort Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on January 31st. As for Onaga, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Valley Heights at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Onaga has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
