Basketball Game Preview: Moffat Cowboys vs. Sargent Farmers

The Moffat Cowboys will take on the Sargent Farmers at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Last Tuesday, Moffat was able to grind out a solid win over Lake City Community, taking the game 56-43. The Cowboys pushed the score to 47-27 by the end of the third, a deficit the 14ers cut but never quite recovered from.

Moffat found their leader in sophomore Preston Heater, who went 8-for-19 en route to 21 points along with five boards and five steals. The game was Heater's seventh in a row with at least 16 points. Another player making a difference was Chase Shellabarger, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.

Moffat was working as a unit and finished the game with ten assists. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.3 assists per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matches they've averaged 9.6.

Meanwhile, Sargent didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against South Park on Tuesday, but they still walked away with a 37-32 victory. The win continues a trend for the Farmers in their matchups with the Burros: they've now won four in a row.

Moffat better focus on containing Kade Temple and Lucas Garcia as the pair were huge in Sargent's win. Temple posted nine points in addition to five boards and three steals, while Garcia had 12 points along with five rebounds and four steals. That's the most steals Temple has posted since back in December of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Corbin Castillo, who earned seven points and three steals.

Moffat has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-10 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.6 points over those games. Sargent's record now sits at 7-13.
