Basketball Recap: York Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Lainey Portwine and Murfee Nickels

York was the 41-31 winner over Waverly when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The York Dukes fell 43-30 to the Waverly Vikings on Thursday. The loss was the Dukes' first of the season.

York's loss came despite strong showings from Murfee Nickels and Lainey Portwine. Nickels posted eight points and three steals, while Portwine earned ten points. The dominant performance gave Nickels a new career-high in steals.

Waverly had a senior duo take command as Parker Christiansen put up 12 points and Annie Harms had ten points. Another player making a difference was Kenna Kottman, who posted five points.

Having lost for the first time this season, York fell to 2-1. As for Waverly, the win keeps them at an undefeated 4-0.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. York will welcome Lexington at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. York is facing Lexington at the right time seeing as Lexington is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Waverly, they will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Crete at 5:30 p.m. on January 3, 2025.
