Softball Recap: Garfield Comes Up Short

Garfield extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping them down to 5-8. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 16-14 heartbreaker at the hands of the South El Monte Eagles. The Bulldogs were not able to make up for their loss to the Eagles from their previous meeting back in April of 2018.

Madilyn Munoz made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 3-for-5 with five RBI and two doubles. Another player making a difference was Jema Aguiar, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

As for South El Monte, their win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-1-1. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 18.8 runs over those games.

On South El Monte's side, the team relied heavily on Katelyn Berumen, who went 3-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Gia Castruita was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Garfield will take on Marshall at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for South El Monte, they will be playing at home against El Monte at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Eagles' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Lions have averaged an impressive 9.1 runs per game this season.
