Volleyball Recap: Challenger Starts Season with Win at Home

Challenger took care of business in their home opener (barely) on Monday. They had just enough and edged out the Haywood Christian Academy Red Wolves 3-2. The Firebirds have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Red Wolves, too.

Challenger had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first two sets, they turned around to win the next three. The match finished with set scores of 17-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-7.

Their offense was headlined by Kate Hightower and Gabriela Ramirez-Soto, who picked up four kills apiece. They got some help from Addison Jones and her 13 assists. Yareli Saucedo-Garcia controlled things from the service line, finishing with five aces.

Haywood Christian Academy is on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Challenger is set to face off against their familiar foe Nebo Crossing Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Haywood Christian Academy will challenge rival Blue Ridge Early College at 5:30 p.m. on the 26th.
