Basketball Recap: Sugar Creek Charter Takes a Loss

Sugar Creek Charter had lost six straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Friday they dropped down to 2-7 to make it seven. They were beaten by the Queen's Grant Stallions 79-40. The Wildcats were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 51-21.

Several Wildcats players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Derek Thomas, who posted 14 points and seven boards. Another player making a difference was Jaquise Giles, who shot 67% from the field on his way to 13 points.

As for Queen's Grant, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.1 points over those games.

Queen's Grant found their leader in sophomore Chase Smith, who dropped a double-double with 31 points and 12 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Smith has scored all season. Mekhi Allen was another key player, putting up 11 points along with seven boards and four steals.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sugar Creek Charter will be home for the holidays to greet Jackson Day at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wildcats' defense better be ready for this one: the Mariners have averaged an impressive 63.2 points per game this season. As for Queen's Grant, they will welcome Carolina International at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
