Minnesota in position to produce Cup winner for the second straight year.

The penultimate edition of the MaxPreps Cup standings find Edina (Minn.) moving back into first place ahead of winter season leader Carmel (Ind.) by a total of six points.

The standings come after the month of May and include only national rankings added to state championships and runner-up finishes from the fall and winter seasons. Results of state championships for the spring will be added on the final 2023-24 standings in late July. In some cases, point totals upon the conclusion of the winter season have decreased in the current May standings due to changes in year-long national rankings in sports like swimming and golf.

Edina benefited from changes in the national swimming ratings by Swimcloud. The Minnesota school gained 89 points in the boys and girls swimming rankings combined to move ahead of Carmel, 1,874 to 1,868.

National rankings were compiled by the MaxPreps staff writers for baseball and softball while the MaxPreps computer rankings were used for boys volleyball, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys and girls soccer. Boys and girls golf rankings came from HighSchoolGolf.org while swimming rankings came from Swimcloud.

For the first time, MaxPreps compiled team rankings for wrestling and track and field by using individual rankings from outside sources. Using individual rankings from FloWrestling, MaxPreps assigned point totals to the top eight wrestlers in each weight class and added up the totals to determine the top team. Using this method, Wyoming Seminary College Prep (Kingston, Pa.) came out on top, followed by Stillwater (Okla.).

Similarly for track and field, MaxPreps used the Track and Field News individual top 10 lists compiled by Jack Shepard (boys) and Jack Pfeifer. Atascocita (Humble, Texas) came out as the top boys team while Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) was the top girls team.

The MaxPreps Cup is an awards program that attempts to determine the top high school athletic programs in the nation. The algorithm uses state championships, runner-up finishes and national rankings to compile the list. The algorithm is a weighted system based on the size of the state, the popularity of the sport, the enrollment classification and the number of schools competing in each enrollment classification.

The final MaxPreps Cup standings will be published in late July following the conclusion of the Iowa baseball and softball state championships.
