            Baseball Recap: Summit Hilltoppers vs. Cranford Cougars        
        
		
        
        
            Summit fought the good fight in their extra-innings  game against Cranford  on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Cougars by a score of  4-3. The Hilltoppers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their  defeat the last time these teams played  back in May of 2024.
 Gaven Smith put in work no matter where he played. On the mound, he  struck out six batters over  7.1 innings while giving up just one earned  (and three unearned) runs off   seven  hits. Smith was also solid in the batter's box,  going 2-for-3 with two  RBI.
 Smith wasn't  the only one making solid contact as  four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was  TJ Flack, who  scored a  run and  stole a base while going 1-for-4.  Matt Mckeever also deserves some recognition as  he  scored his first  run of the season.
This is the second loss in a row for Summit and  nudges their season record down to 1-5. As for Cranford,  with the  win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 3-3.
 Looking ahead, Summit will look to defend their home field  on Wednesday against South Plainfield  at 4:00  p.m. The last four games the Tigers have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one. As for Cranford, they will venture away from home to  take on Roselle Park  at 10:00  a.m.  on Thursday.
