Basketball Recap: Michael Trechter's Big Game Can't Quite Lead St. Mary's over Forge Christian

St. Mary lost against Forge Christian back in March of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The matchup between the St. Mary's Pirates and the Forge Christian Fury didn't end well, with the St. Mary's Pirates falling 69-55. While losing is never fun, the Pirates can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 137th, while the Fury are ranked 31st).

St. Mary's lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Michael Trechter, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 13 points and six boards. Another player making a difference was Bret Stewart, who posted eight points and four steals.

Even though they lost, St. Mary's smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

Forge Christian got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Sebastian Still out in front who made all 7 shots he took racking up 16 points and three steals. Those 16 points gave Still a new career-high. Owen Hovis was another key player, going 5 for 8 to rack up 14 points.

St. Mary's loss dropped their record down to 10-7. As for Forge Christian, they pushed their record up to 13-5 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Mary's will take on Salida at 6:30 p.m. on February 15th. As for Forge Christian, they will face off against Stargate School at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Stargate School is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 65.1 points per game this season.
