Basketball Recap: Athens Academy Takes a Loss

Athens Academy lost a heartbreaker to Commerce when they met back in December of 2021, and they left with a heavy heart again on Friday. The Athens Academy Spartans took a 62-45 bruising from the Commerce Tigers. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Spartans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 46-44 back in January.

Commerce's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Essien Lockleer led the charge by going 5 of 9 on his way to 11 points and seven assists. Evan Peters was another key player, putting up ten points along with eight boards and three steals.

Athens Academy's loss dropped their record down to 10-12. As for Commerce, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 15-8 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens Academy will square off against Banks County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Banks County will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Athens Academy surely won't give up without a fight. As for Commerce, they will challenge Oglethorpe County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Commerce is facing Oglethorpe County at the right time seeing as Oglethorpe County is stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
