Basketball Recap: Merritt Island Christian Find Success

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Merritt Island, Merritt Island Christian was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They pulled ahead with a 44-43 photo finish over the Morningside Academy Eagles. For the Cougars, this counts as revenge for the 51-39 victory the Eagles walked away with the last time they faced one another back in February of 2024.

Merritt Island Christian got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Connor Angstadt out in front who posted 14 points and five boards. Another player making a difference was Trey Nevad, who went 7 of 14 en route to 14 points and seven rebounds.

Merritt Island Christian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in 12 consecutive contests.

Despite the loss, Morningside Academy still got an impressive performance from Elijah Bell, who went 6 for 14 on his way to 18 points and five boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Stephen Moss, who had nine points and eight rebounds.

Merritt Island Christian's victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 9-8. As for Morningside Academy, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 12-9.

Merritt Island Christian will face off against Florida Prep at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Florida Prep will roll in looking for their ninth straight win, something Merritt Island Christian surely won't give up without a fight. As for Morningside Academy, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 68-60 victory against Melbourne Central Catholic on the 25th.
