The Eagle Mustangs will head out on the road to face off against the Owyhee Storm at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Eagle is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.
Eagle's last matchup with Mountain View could've gone either way, but unfortunately the same can't be said for the pair's contest on Thursday. The Mustangs came up short against the Mavericks, falling 12-1. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Mustangs, who until this matchup were averaging 3.58 runs allowed.
Stephen Egan was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run over 4.1 innings pitched. What's more, he gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in March.
On the hitting side, Easton Gothberg made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run.
Meanwhile, Owyhee faced Centennial in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Storm came out on top in a nail-biter against the Patriots, sneaking past 8-6. The win continues a trend for the Storm in their matchups with the Patriots: they've now won five in a row.
Gage Haws and Jack Hallenbeck did most of the damage at the plate: Haws went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run, while Hallenbeck went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run. That's the most RBI Haws has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Shelby Pease, who went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Eagle's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-8. As for Owyhee, their victory bumped their record up to 21-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Eagle has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Owyhee struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Eagle came out on top in a nail-biter against Owyhee in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, sneaking past 6-5. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
