Basketball Recap: Make It Five in a Row for Eastern Wayne

While Eastern Wayne didn't have the best season last year (they finished 11-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They were the clear victor by a 113-87 margin over the Southern Wayne Saints on Friday. The Warriors have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three contests by 26 points or more this season.

It was another big night for Michael Bailey, who posted 43 points along with six rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Charlie Thomas, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Despite the loss, Southern Wayne saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Kairell Evans went 6 of 11 on his way to 22 points in addition to eight rebounds and six assists. Those six assists set a new season-high mark for Evans. Another player making a difference was Jaylen Carr, who went 6 of 8 en route to 12 points and five assists.

The victory was the fifth in a row for Eastern Wayne, bringing their record for this year to 5-1. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 88.8 points per game. As for Southern Wayne, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-4.

Eastern Wayne wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, an 84-68 win against North Lenoir on the 14th. Southern Wayne and Wayne Preparatory Academy will compete for holiday cheer at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Southern Wayne has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
