Volleyball Recap: Gulf Shores Wins High-Profile Match Against Jasper

Gulf Shores faced Jasper in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Dolphins had just enough and edged out the Vikings 2-1. That's more bragging rights for the Dolphins, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Gulf Shores had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first set, they turned around to win the next two. The match finished with set scores of 20-25, 25-21, 28-26.

Elle Helton paced Gulf Shores' offense, picking up 14 kills. Helton were helped by Velmira Sobol and Macey Moore, who contributed 17 assists each. Helton was also solid from the service line: she led the team with four aces.

Addison Black and Maysia Courington certainly did their best on Thursday to avoid the loss. Black had 17 digs and three assists, while Courington had nine digs and three aces. Black has been hot recently, having posted 12 or more digs the last four times she's played.

Gulf Shores is on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 15 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 26-8 record this season. As for Jasper, their loss ended a five-match streak of away wins and brought them to 29-9.

Gulf Shores wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 2-1 victory against Oak Mountain on the 9th. As for Jasper, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 2-0 win against James Clemens on the 10th.
