Baseball Recap: South-Doyle Comes Up Short

South-Doyle had lost three straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 12-16-1 to make it four. They came up short against the Heritage Mountaineers, falling 12-2. The Cherokees were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Mountaineers earlier this season, when they won 8-3.

Hunter Tipton made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and two runs. He has become a key player for South-Doyle: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 9-15-1 otherwise.

As for Heritage, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 21-10 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games.

On Heritage's side, Derek Hodge looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Hodge has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Gavin Hughes was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March. Evan Webb was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. South-Doyle is set to square off against their familiar foe Sequoyah at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Heritage will take on rival Loudon at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
