Basketball Recap: Pioneer Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Alex Macias and Melvir Pooni

Pioneer was the 62-51 winner over Highlands when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Pioneer Patriots took a 56-51 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Highlands Scots. The Patriots have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Pioneer's loss on Monday came despite strong showings from Melvir Pooni and Alex Macias. Pooni posted 16 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals, while Macias made all 5 shots he took to post 11 points. Another player making a difference was Emiliano Romero, who had four points along with five boards and three blocks.

Highlands' win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Avion Weaver, who put up 19 points and four steals. Weaver is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Aj Stewart, who posted nine points in addition to seven steals and five boards.

Pioneer's defeat dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Highlands, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-0.

Pioneer wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 67-53 win against Winters on the 11th. As for Highlands, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 76-41 loss against Calaveras on the 11th.
