Softball Recap: Mt. Vernon Takes Down Ranked East Newton

Mt. Vernon faced East Newton in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Mountaineers were the clear victors by a 10-3 margin over the Patriots. Considering the Mountaineers have won 12 matchups by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Cheyenne Bieber made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out ten over six innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one hit in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, Jocelyn Liss and Rae Downing did most of the damage at the plate: Liss went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one double, while Downing scored three runs while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave Liss a new career-high. Maddie Schubert was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

Mt. Vernon is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for East Newton, their loss ended an eight-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 5-4.

Looking ahead, Mt. Vernon will challenge Fair Grove at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for East Newton, they will square off against Greenfield at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
