Laney is 10-0 against Ashley since February of 2020 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Laney Buccaneers will look to defend their home court against the Ashley Screaming Eagle at 7:30 p.m. Laney is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57.7 points per game this season.
Last Thursday, Laney lost to Hoggard at home by a 63-46 margin.
Despite the defeat, Laney saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Dylan Fortun posted 15 points and five boards. Jordan Mosley was another key player, putting up seven points and nine rebounds.
Even though they lost, Laney smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in six consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Ashley came up short against New Hanover last Thursday, falling 84-62. While losing is never fun, the Screaming Eagle can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 255th, while the Wildcats are ranked 19th).
Laney will have to contain Quinn Bentley as he made an impact in Ashley's last game. He went 7 for 11 en route to 19 points. That's the most points Bentley has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Nate Jarrell, who put up 16 points and six boards.
Ashley has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-8 record this season. As for Laney, their loss dropped their record down to 8-5.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Laney has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 31.3 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Ashley struggles in that department as they've been averaging 27.4 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Laney was able to grind out a solid victory over Ashley when the teams last played back in December of 2024, winning 44-33. Will Laney repeat their success, or does Ashley have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
