Softball Recap: Greer Takes a Loss

Greer fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Pickens on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Blue Flame by a score of 4-3. That's two games in a row now that the Yellow Jackets have lost by just one run.

Morgan Arterburn spent all 7.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Greer saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aubrey Merritt, who went 3-for-4 with one run. Bailey Zayas also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Greer has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost seven of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-11-2 record this season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the defeats came by an average of only 1.71 runs. As for Pickens, they pushed their record up to 11-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home.

Coincidentally, Greer and Pickens will both be playing Blue Ridge the next time they take the field. The Blue Flame will head out to face the Fighting Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, while the Yellow Jackets will host them at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
