Flag Football Recap: Santa Margarita Falls Short Against Ranked Jserra Catholic

Santa Margarita faced JSerra Catholic in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Eagles came up short against the Lions, falling 20-0. The game marked the first time this season in which the Eagles were not able to get on the board.

Even if they lost, Santa Margarita's defense still kept up the pressure with three sacks. Gia Hinman refused to say out of the backfield, picking up three sacks all by herself.

JSerra Catholic got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Ava Irwin out in front who picked up 74 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Ava Van Heerde was another key passer, throwing for 120 yards and two touchdowns while completing 78.3% of her passes.

Santa Margarita has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 18-6 record this season. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 19-1 Orange Lutheran and 11-6 Mater Dei (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 89.9% over those games). As for JSerra Catholic, the win keeps them at an undefeated 22-0.

Santa Margarita wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next matchup, a 28-26 victory against Mater Dei on the 9th. As for JSerra Catholic, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 21-20 win against Orange Lutheran on the 9th.
