Softball Recap: Gilbert Christian Takes a Loss

Gilbert Christian lost against San Tan Foothills back in March, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Knights fell 10-5 to the Sabercats. The Knights' loss continues a trend for the squad, making it eight in a row.

Meredith Whitehurst was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She struck out 13 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off four hits. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.4 strikeouts per game. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Whitehurst wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Abigale Trask, who went 1-for-3 with one run. Madelynn Haiduk also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Gilbert Christian's defeat dropped their record down to 2-16. As for San Tan Foothills, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 3-14.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gilbert Christian will head out to challenge Blue Ridge at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. The Yellow Jackets have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.57 runs per game on average), something the Knights will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for San Tan Foothills, they are taking a road trip to take on ALA - Anthem South at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. The Sabercats are facing the Titans at the right time seeing as the Titans are stuck on a six-game losing streak.
