Baseball Recap: Westborough Comes Up Short

Westborough had lost eight straight at home dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 2-13 to make it nine. They took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wachusett Regional Mountaineers. For Wachusett Regional's part, Brady Hughes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on seven hits. Hughes has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Caden Lane was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April. Brendan Mariani was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Westborough and Wachusett Regional could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Massachusetts Rankings. The Rangers will challenge Shrewsbury at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (209 vs. 6). Meanwhile, Wachusett Regional (ranked 101st) will meet Grafton (ranked 28th) at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
