Softball Recap: Kapa'a Picks Up Sixth Consecutive Victory

Kapa'a came tearing into Wednesday's match with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12.6 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Kauai Red Raiders a 12-0 shutout. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last seven times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Kapa'a got a great performance from Anabel Capistran-Nakagoshi as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over five innings pitched. Capistran-Nakagoshi has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Sienna Yamashita, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and five RBI. She also put up a triple, which was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Andie Iglesia, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.

Kapa'a was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .462. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .357 or higher in six consecutive contests.

Kapa'a's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-1. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-4 Kauai and 1-5 Waimea (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 10.3% over those games). As for Kauai, they are on an 11-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Coincidentally, Kapa'a and Kauai will both be playing Waimea the next time they take the field. The Red Raiders will host the Menehunes at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, while the Warriors will host them at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
