Recap: Gaston Day Spartans vs. Gaston Christian Eagles
The Gaston Day Spartans fought the good fight in their overtime match against the Gaston Christian Eagles on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Eagles 78-73. It was the first time this season that Gaston Day let down their fans at home.
When it comes to explaining why Gaston Day lost, one person who can't be blamed is Chase Owens. Despite the final result, he scored 28 points along with six rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Owens has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Deshawn Coulter, who scored 20 points along with two steals.
Gaston Christian got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Cameron Newman out in front who scored 28 points along with seven assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Makoi Mabor Marier, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 14 rebounds.
Gaston Day's defeat ended a nine-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 14-9. As for Gaston Christian, the win got them back to even at 13-13.
Gaston Day won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Metrolina Christian Academy at 6:00 p.m. on January 23rd. Metrolina Christian Academy will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 261st, while Gaston Day is ranked 103rd). As for Gaston Christian, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against SouthLake Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on January 23rd.
