Preview: Southern Choctaw Indians vs. Leroy Bears
The Southern Choctaw Indians will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against the Leroy Bears at 6:00 p.m. Southern Choctaw has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games.
Southern Choctaw scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They took down Choctaw County 67-52. Given Southern Choctaw's advantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 129th, while Choctaw County is ranked 359th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Marcionna Young, who dropped a double-double on 33 points and ten rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Young has scored at least 25% of Southern Choctaw's points. Another player making a difference was Keri Mcgee, who scored 11 points along with eight rebounds and five assists.
Meanwhile, Leroy got the win against Excel on Monday by a conclusive 38-16. The win was just what Leroy needed coming off of a 76-42 loss in their prior match.
Leroy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Chauncey Dixon led the charge by dropping a double-double on 13 points and 13 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Makayla Payne, who scored ten points along with five rebounds and five steals.
Southern Choctaw's win bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Leroy, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
Southern Choctaw couldn't quite finish off Leroy when the teams last played back in December of 2021 and fell 61-58. Can Southern Choctaw avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
