Basketball Recap: Union Colony Prep Takes a Loss

Union Colony Prep played a tough match on Tuesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were beaten by the Flatirons Academy Bison 93-54. While losing is never fun, the Timberwolves can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 165th, while the Bison are ranked 32nd).

Despite the defeat, Union Colony Prep had strong showings from Josiah Rodriguez, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 boards, and Tanner Sarchet, who almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Sarchet a new career-high in assists (six). Another player making a difference was Juan Espinoza, who posted five points.

Even though they lost, Union Colony Prep smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in nine consecutive contests.

Leading Flatirons Academy to victory were Brandon Ewing and Parker Wilson. Ewing went 13 for 19 en route to 31 points, while Wilson went 7 of 10 on his way to 17 points and five rebounds. Wilson also put up two blocks, which werehis first of the season. Jackson Schulz was another key player, putting up nine points and four steals.

Union Colony Prep's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 6-3. As for Flatirons Academy, they pushed their record up to 6-1 with the win, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season.

Union Colony Prep will host Gilpin County at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Union Colony Prep is facing Gilpin County at the right time seeing as Gilpin County is stuck on a nine-game losing streak. As for Flatirons Academy, they will head out to square off against Denver Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Flatirons Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 66 points per game this season.
