Kingwood and King are an even 4-4 against one another since November of 2016, but not for long. The Mustangs will look to defend their home field on Thursday against the Panthers at 7:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Things were looking good for Kingwood after they put the first points on the board on Friday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They were dealt a 61-34 loss at the hands of Atascocita. The Mustangs were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 40-20.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Jayce Byers, who picked up 144 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He was no stranger to the big play, connecting on a big catch that went for 68 yards. Kye Wehby was another key receiver, picking up 93 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Meanwhile, King had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 32.5 points) and they went ahead and made it five on Friday. They really took it to the Wildcats for the full four quarters, racking up a 54-7 victory. Considering the Panthers have won three games by more than 46 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

King's win came from a few key players Kingwood will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Dillon Mitchell, who picked up 96 receiving yards and two TDs, and also rushed for 59 yards and one touchdown. Another signal caller making a difference was Timothy Potts, who threw for 280 yards and four TDs while completing 71.4% of his passes.

King was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 256 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 193 rushing yards in eight consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

One reason for the win was King's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for six sacks. Dominick Toulon was especially locked on to Humble's QB and sacked him three times. Toulon also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with 12. Keshawn White was another major factor on D, making 12 total tackles (2.0 for loss).

King's win bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Kingwood, they dropped their record down to 4-3 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road.

We should be in store for an exciting game as the two teams have no problem gaining yardage. Kingwood has been on an offensive roll this season, having averaged 350.7 total yards per game. However, it's not like King struggles in that department as they've been averaging 484.7 total yards. With a pair of commanding offenses duking it out, the defenses are going to have their work cut out for them.

Kingwood barely slipped by King in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, winning 21-20. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was the Panthers' Dionne Sims, who rushed for 67 yards and a pair of scores on only nine carries. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Mustangs still be able to contain Sims? There's only one way to find out.
