Football Recap: Sutton Piles Up the Points Against Southern Valley

Sutton extended their winning streak to three on Friday, bumping them up to 3-0. They took their contest with ease, bagging a 70-28 victory over the Southern Valley Eagles. Fans of the Mustangs have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 20+ points.

Connor Hinrichs went supernova, rushing for 223 yards and five touchdowns on only 11 carries. His longest rush was for an impressive 65 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. The team also got some help courtesy of Creighton Jones, who rushed for 77 yards and one TD.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Sutton was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 469 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 225 rushing yards in six consecutive games dating back to last season.

As for Southern Valley, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. The loss continues a trend for them in their meetings with Sutton: they've now lost three in a row.

Despite the defeat, Southern Valley saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Avery Thiessen picked up 55 receiving yards and one score, and also rushed for 49 yards and one touchdown. Hayden Lans was in the mix too, providing the Eagles with two TDs.

Sutton and Southern Valley will both get their first taste of in-conference action in their upcoming games. The Mustangs will take on rival Thayer Central at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Southern Valley is set to face off against their familiar foe Arapahoe at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
