Basketball Recap: Aaliyah Austin's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Irwin County over Atkinson County

Irwin County lost against Atkinson County last Friday and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Irwin County Indians fell 55-47 to the Atkinson County Rebels. While the Indians didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Rebels 16-10 in the first quarter.

Irwin County's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Aaliyah Austin, who dropped a double-double with 20 points and 11 boards. That was a full 42.6% of Irwin County's points, marking the 12th time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. Ava Avant was another key player, going 6 of 12 to rack up 14 points in addition to eight rebounds and six steals.

Even though they lost, Irwin County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 25 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 20 offensive boards in six consecutive contests.

Irwin County has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight matches, which has put a noticeable dent in their 10-15 record this season. As for Atkinson County, their victory bumped their record up to 7-17.

As of now, neither Irwin County nor Atkinson County have any future games scheduled.
