Basketball Recap: Leon Takes a Loss

Leon lost against Gainesville back in January of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Leon Lions were beaten by the Gainesville Hurricanes 67-23. While losing is never fun, the Lions can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 310th, while the Hurricanes are ranked 50th).

When it comes to explaining why Leon lost, don't look at Tanner Owens. Despite the final result, she posted ten points and three steals. Owens has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played.

Gainesville got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jayden Terry out in front who went 9-for-10 to rack up 23 points in addition to five boards and five steals. The dominant performance also gave Terry a new career-high in field goal percentage (90%). Jamison Cardwell was another key player, going 5-for-12 on her way to 12 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals.

Leon's loss dropped their record down to 11-15. As for Gainesville, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-8 record this season.

Leon does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Gainesville, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 64-41 victory against Lincoln on the 8th.
