Basketball Recap: Wekiva Takes a Loss

Wekiva had lost three straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped down to 4-4 to make it four. They were dealt a 67-36 loss at the hands of the Bishop Moore Hornets. The Mustangs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hornets apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January.

Wekiva's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alexis Hill, who shot 63% from the field on her way to 14 points and eight boards. Hill has also been stellar as far as shooting accuracy is concerned: she's posted one of at least 50% every time she's hit the court this season. Tiana Washington was another key player, putting up seven points and three steals.

As for Bishop Moore, their victory bumped their record up to 8-2. The final result isn't all that surprising considering their considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 12th, while Wekiva is ranked 98th).

Bishop Moore's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Alysya Smith, who went 5-for-10 to rack up 11 points and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Kylee Trent, who shot 83% from the field en route to 11 points.

Coincidentally, Wekiva and Bishop Moore will both be playing Apopka the next time they take the court. The Mustangs will head out to face the Blue Darters at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, while the Hornets will host them at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
