Baseball Recap: Mayfield Takes a Loss

Mayfield extended their losing streak to five on Monday, dropping their season record down to 4-11 in the process. They came up short against the Riverside Beavers, falling 13-2. The Wildcats were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Beavers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Ben Koret made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two triples and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Mayfield's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 1-10 when he doesn't).

As for Riverside, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games.

On Riverside's side, they got a great performance from Mason Pozo as he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. Pozo has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Austin Wittreich, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Mo Dolce, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Riverside beat Mayfield by a score of 5-1 on Wednesday.
